American Kids

The latest Barna report shows that kids, in the opinion of American adults, are not being adequately prepared for life intellectually, physically, emotionally, spiritually, or morally.  (Note that pretty much covers all the bases.)  The intellectual aspect ranked the highest: about one-fifth of adults interviewed said kids were doing "pretty well" or "superbly".  Morally?  Spiritually?  Those ranked the lowest.  Around 70% said kids have not been sufficiently prepared for life in those areas.
George Barna's opinion:

The common strategy of waiting for social institutions to provide whatever their children need is seriously flawed.  The family is obliged to invest in the life preparation of their own children. . .Rather than play victim and blame social institutions for inadequate performance of duties, millions of families would be well-advised to rearrange their priorities and reclaim their commitment to preparing their children for life.

Just because it seems relevant, here's a quote from ancient historian Josephus:

As for ourselves, therefore, we neither inhabit a maritime country, nor do we delight in merchandise, nor in such a mixture with other men as arises from it; but the cities we dwell in are remote from the sea, and having a fruitful country for our habitation, we take pains in cultivating that only.  Our principal care of all is this, to educate our children well; and we think it to be the most necessary business of our whole life to observe the laws that have been given us, and to keep those rules of piety that have been delivered down to us.  --Josephus, in Flavius Josephus Against Apion. (translation by William Whiston)
